8.01 Episode reaction...(finally.*g*)

I had an AWESOME time watching the premiere on the big screen last night. Not only watching it with fellow fans (YAY!) AND getting a fabulous goodies bag (consisting of holy water, cookies, pie, black goo, PUDDING and those little GI Joe men the boys play with in Swan Song!), but also seeing those two GORGEOUS men up close and personal was... well,... NO WORDS! Just a massive *THUD* and *SWOON* It was also FAB being able to thrash the episode out straight after with fans.

Aannyways....

First up - I LOVE, LOVED IT. In fact the more I think about it the more I'm impressed with it. I do have to watch it again to catch everything but I thought it was an extremely tight, well constructed, interesting and intriguing episode.

I also need to say that I may be the only gal in fandom to say this but I LOVED Sam's hair. \o/ I'm so glad they've kept it long and flowing. I could be a little wanky and say it was *extra* long because this shows Sam hasn't been bothered getting it cut. His life was "free and easy" and hair cutting just didn't feature that much. It's shows his disinterest in his overall life... (Shutup. I can meta about Sam's hair if I want to...)

Some episode highlights and thinky thoughts:

I think the way they chose to open the episode was rather interesting. Two young people camping and there's something outside. It reminded me a little of Wendigo. It certainly felt like numerous episode openers where the Monster of the Week is introduced. I love it because the "monster" turns out to be Dean. What a great way to introduce a character who has been living (and later we find out, helping) monsters. I'm not sure if it's there to suggest that Dean might well be a monster of sorts or it was just symbolic. Either way... GOOD CHOICE!

I adored ALL of Dean's storyline. There's still so much yet to find out but what we got was awesome. So many fabulous questions left unanswered. I particularly love how Dean not only (seemingly) adapted to Purgatory but he also seemed to thrive there. The notion of it being "pure" for Dean is wonderful. I can't wait to find out more but I definitely think it's a great direction for his character. (I can mentioned how god damn HOT he was too can't I? *fans self*)

I have to say I am glad I was spoiled for Sam's reaction to Dean's return. I've spent the last 3 months thrashing that out and worrying and weeping and generally being OMG they are going to character assassinate Sam, but after seeing it I don't feel bad - at all! I mean it was damn hard hearing Sam admitting to not looking for Dean but I KNOW there's so much more to the story. The fact the his not looking was made a big deal of means it's IMPORTANT. And that's all I really want.

For me, the most important scene in revealing Sam's "true" state of mind whilst he was "truly alone" was the scene with the dog at the vet. That level of emotion is more of an indication of what was (is?) really going on. We SAW a lot of Dean's "secrets" in this episode, but we only got glimpses of Sam's. There's just so much more going on. My initial reaction is that Sam might be lying about not looking for Dean, but I can also accept that he just simply gave up. (There's so much more to say about all this but I'm holding off for the moment. There's just too much we don't know and brain is feeling like mush at the moment. ( dotfic sums it up nicely for me here though.).

I also think making Amelia unsympathetic was important. She was deliberately made unlikeable so there's a HEAP more going on with her that first mets the eye. Just like with Sam. I think making her like that and Sam almost overly distraught was very significant. And the fact that the word "responsibility" was used in this scene, mirroring Dean's protest that Sam had a responsibility to Kevin and to others, was also highly significant.

*BOUNCES* I felt it was such a strong season opener. I sincerely hope they can maintain that level of intrigue, tight writing, awesome cinematography (how's all those low angle shots?! Wheeee!) and strong character story lines.

I know there's a lot more to say but I think because I have chatted and thought about it so much before now I'm having trouble rehashing it here. Needless to say I pretty much loved EVERYTHING!

I want to post pictures but that will have to wait for another time...;)

Hee! Yay! I'm glad you enjoyed it and had such a great time! \o/ :D

I watched it Thursday morning, happy to find that my usual streaming site had uploaded it. I was munching my breakfast, enjoying the time with just me and my show, seeing the story unfold and then: what?! over already?! Surely that wasn't 42 minutes? - haha. I will watch it again tomorrow. :D

I am going to have to wait to watch each Thursday night - which is good because I have the house to myself in the evenings. :))

I did go very fast - I think because there's just SO MUCH more we need to find out yet. I didn't want it to end.

Yay! Show is back. <33

\o/ SO glad you liked it! I've been almost afraid to read episode reactions . . .

I'm not sure if it's there to suggest that Dean might well be a monster of sorts or it was just symbolic.

Hee. I don't think it was "just" symbolic. Dean's been up to no good, methinks. ;)

My initial reaction is that Sam might be lying about not looking for Dean, but I can also accept that he just simply gave up.

That was kind of my response, too, as I just can't believe that Sam wouldn't even TRY to find out what had happened to Dean. I can't wait to hear your further thoughts on the matter.

such a strong season opener. I sincerely hope they can maintain that level of intrigue, tight writing, awesome cinematography

Yes, yes, yesyesyesyesyes . . . YES! If they stay at this level of intensity, S8 may very well be the best season ever.

I haven't had a chance to read many ep reactions. Life has been a little crazy (in a good way!). I think it's mostly been positive. I think? (I hope!)

I feel like there is so much going on for Sam. There's so much hidden and I just KNOW he'll have good reasons for not looking for Dean. I am dying to find out. How awesome we have another episode next week! \o/

**I also need to say that I may be the only gal in fandom to say this but I LOVED Sam's hair. \o/ I'm so glad they've kept it long and flowing. Hey, meta away!!!!! There can never be too much meta about the Sam!Hair. And you are not alone. I freakin' love Sam's do. Like you say it's long and flowing and gorgeous and not weighed down with product and flat-ironed to death. I figure it was because he had given up hunting and didn't need to impersonate cops and FBI agents that he just let it grow and I likee!!!!

I can't wait to get lots more of what happened to both our boys during the year. A lot of things certainly need explaining and I'm really looking forward to all the lovely flashbacks and reveals.

As expected I've seen a fair bit of Sam being critisized by parts of fandom for not looking for Dean and abandoning Kevin but am also pleased to see a lot of fans supporting Sam too. We have only seen the first ep and know very, very little about what he went through so it's way too early to judge him for what he did or didn't do.

I really hope there is a damn good explanation for Amelia being such a b*tch during the vet hospital scene as I'm having a hard time imagining Sam hooking up with such an unlikable person. But we have only seen bare glimpses so I'm not totally condemning her yet.

The scene with Sam packing and leaving without so much as looking at or speaking to Amelia also intrigues me as to what their relationship was like to get Sam looking so sad and depressed. And the fact that she didn't call out or try to stop him leaving has me thinking the break-up was mutual.

I'm also dying to know what sort of job Sam got to support himself or did he go do some sort of schooling??

The Dean & Benny friendship is very interesting but has got me worried too. Dean is already making secret phonecalls to Benny and I get the feeling he isn't going to tell Sam about him anytime soon, despite giving Sam holy hell for doing exactly the same thing back in season 4.

Yay for another ep next week but can't it be Thursday already????

Hey there! (Missyjack gave me your hug! *g*)

And yes...Sam not living the hunting life means he doesn't need to pretend to be anyone else. So Sam being only Sam means GORGEOUS HAIR!

Sam needs supporting...*pets him*. There's still so much we don't know yet. The best thing is it's being treated seriously - it's not going to be a throw away thing. There are too many hints that "something" has happened in Dean's time away.

I really hope there is a damn good explanation for Amelia being such a b*tch during the vet hospital scene

I think there has to be. She obviously has a back story and I have to say I'm really looking forward to how that works in with Sam's story. I'm important, that's for sure.

And yeah - good thinking about what Sam actually did as a job while Dean was away. I hope we get some more on that also.

The Dean and Benny relationship is going to be an interesting one also. Dean has changed and I can't wait to see what made that happen.

WHEEEE! So much to look forward to! :DDD

I also need to say that I may be the only gal in fandom to say this but I LOVED Sam's hair. \o/ Heh. You are not, babe. I too have just waxed and waned about Sam's hair in my review..*g*

Like you I got a HUGE kick out of Dean's storyline and I *loved* everything about Purgatory - including the bleached out way it was lit and lots of slanty camera angles.. and Benny reeled me in immediately.

I'm less sure of Sam's arc, but I *do* know that Jared could sell ice to Eskimos whose mothers had just died. Whatever the wrtiers come up with for Sam, he will give it depth, emotion and his own SamnDean take on the lines and exchanges. In that I have faith.

So yes, onwards and upwards!
6th-Oct-2012 11:43 pm (UTC)
YAY! Fellow Sam hair lover! \o/

but I *do* know that Jared could sell ice to Eskimos whose mothers had just died.

I love this! I absolutely agree that Jared really sold Sam in this episode. I was so worried how on earth him not looking for Dean could be believable. Even though we know there's a lot more to the story I really felt like there was a good reason behind it.

So yay! Can't wait to see more eps. So much intrigue (and I suppose now my only worry is that the reveals are as good as we can "imagine" them being...)

i couldn't agree more!!!!!YEEEEsss! I LOVED IT!!
i'm sooo excited for our SHOW and i wasn't feeling like that since too much time!
YAY!

Yay! Great to hear your excited! I think it was a re-invigorating episode! :)
6th-Oct-2012 01:47 pm (UTC)
I enjoyed it a lot too, especially the opening scenes with Dean's return. I'm just going to wait and see as far as Sam's behaviour goes, and trust that it will all be explained!

The goody bags with holy water and cookies sound absolutely delightful!
6th-Oct-2012 11:46 pm (UTC)
Oh yay! So glad you hear you enjoyed it. So many great SamnDean moments. Their epic love continues!!

The goodie bags were a delight! So was the whole event. You would have really enjoyed it - especially the post show chat!

I agree with all of this completely! In my mind the same thing happened at the start of Season 2.

Yay! Sam hair tells a story! :DD
6th-Oct-2012 05:19 pm (UTC)
So Jealous. It would have been fabulous to watch with other fans.

I LOVED it, too, and it kept me thinking long after it was done.

I also need to say that I may be the only gal in fandom to say this but I LOVED Sam's hair. \o/ I'm so glad they've kept it long and flowing.

ME TOOOOOOOOOO! I wasn't positive that it hadn't reached that tipping point for hair length until I saw it. Had to hit the pause button for a few moments, I confess.

I've tried to stay spoiler free but that's almost impossible for the internet. So I knew about the overall spoilery. I wasn't sure how I felt about that "One year later" deal because sometimes that has annoyed me in other shows *cough* Merlin *cough. Because, we miss something. We miss what is important to the ongoing storyline. All those moments that we are merely forced to imagine (Or read about in enormous amounts of fanfic). I definitely fretted over Sam walking away and how that was really gonna play out. BUT, SPN handled it really well. I was sucked into the flashbacks. They have me hooked wanting to know how the backstory played out.

And I agree with your take on Sam and Dean. In the first 5 minutes even before Dean had managed to utter more than a sentence, I had the impression that this is a very different Dean. This Dean was less swaggering bravado and more purposeful hunter. He had the bearing and moved as someone who has come into his own. I think that is amazing for an actor to be able to portray that difference.

I had this "Sammy, WTH" visceral reaction to him not even looking for Dean while at the same time I'm railing at Dean to cut him some slack. He'd lost EVERYONE! After Cold Oak, you'd think that Dean would have some sense of this. I think there's more to it but even if there isn't, I can see that it is quite possible that Sam was just DONE. He was just so distraught and devastated and tired in those scenes with the dog. When I watched the reunion the second time, I was less "WTH, Sammy" and more taken aback with how weary he seemed; how resigned he was that he is "back in" to this life he never really wanted.

Gosh, I just can't wait for more and this is the first time that I will be watching the entire season in real time, which is waaaay to slow than Netflix/DVD time, let me tell you!!
7th-Oct-2012 12:13 am (UTC)
Hee! I think I will be hitting the pause button on re-watch! So many glorious, gorgeous boy shots. :))

And YES YES to everything you have said here. I was really worried about the 1 year later and Sam not looking for Dean but I think the episode sold it so well - better than I expected.

I still haven't had a chance to re-watch so I'm going to be looking for all sorts of things the second time around. I think both Jared and Jensen did great jobs with their characters.

And YAY we have another episode SOON! can't wait! <33

i am going to apologize right from the start on this one. it's going to be pretty incoherent with YES THIS and quoting everything you said back to you. fair warning.

I also need to say that I may be the only gal in fandom to say this but I LOVED Sam's hair.

seriously????? fandom doesn't like the hair??? you're joking, right? because i was quite literally MESMERIZED by his hair. i'm not kidding. i missed some of the dialogue because of it. i think he probably cuts it because of recent con footage, but ugh. i love it so, so much when it's long like that.

and i would WELCOME a meta about sam's hair from you.

I love it because the "monster" turns out to be Dean.

ohhhhhhh!! i never thought about it like that before. i love that too!!

The fact the his not looking was made a big deal of means it's IMPORTANT.

yes, this. just. so much THIS. thank you for putting it so LOGICALLY.

She was deliberately made unlikeable so there's a HEAP more going on with her that first mets the eye.

you know what word i'm gonna use here? THIS. repetitive, i know, but here we are. i really completely agree that there's SO MUCH more to the whole sam and amelia thing and as painful as it is, we're just going to have to wait and see how it all plays out.

this ep is so layered and i think it's an amazing set up for the season.

seriously????? fandom doesn't like the hair???M

I got the sense (with the group I watched it with) that Sam's hair was going to cause some issues. A bit of..."it looked ridiculous".. but I ADORED IT. Reminded me of his character in Friday 13th. I love his hair in that too...

And I'm so glad this all made sense to you! :D The Amelia thing is particularly curious - I think sentences like "that's my hero" and "your responsibility" were there specifically because Sam was having those very issues. Amelia seems to have those issues too (so we can see why they ended up together...;D)

Can't wait for next week (and all those after) to find out what is really going on.

Thanks for dropping in.

So I started to read that "meta" and there's just so much I disagree with it on that I had to stop. Man, I think it's time to leave fandom if that's what it's becoming.
6th-Oct-2012 11:56 pm (UTC)
Oh sorry to hear that hun. Actually, I did see your posts about not being into it any more. And I get that - if you can't get enjoyment out of the show there's no point watching or fanning it.

Personally, I just loved the insight about where Sam could be at. Not to say he IS there, it just resonated for me. I think there's just so much more to his story and I am so excited for that.

I admit to wanting (rather desperately) to remain invested because I get so much fun out of all this, so I think I mainly focus on the positive. I mean I could get all distressed about Sam acting OOC, but tbh I'm intrigued by this new direction. IF they end up not having a decent explanation then I'll be more upset, but from that episode alone I can see that there is just so much else going on. And also... Sam's hair. :) (ooh and purgatory!Dean)...did I mention my attraction to the show is pretty shallow at time?...;)

Mostly, the epic love story of Sam and Dean is EPIC and continues in glorious fashion.

*hugs*

Mostly, the epic love story of Sam and Dean is EPIC and continues in glorious fashion.

I don't get how people can even say that though. Sam just walked away. He didn't even bother looking for Dean, just went off and got a dog and a girlfriend. And let's not even touch Dean and his new monster BFF who he apparently hugs tighter than Sam.

That's not "epic love story" to me at all. It's not even Supernatural. :(

(Ugh, sorry. I've just read some reaction posts than have me in tears right now. I MISS the show I used to love.)
7th-Oct-2012 12:38 am (UTC)
I'm sorry hun. *hugs* some more. I suppose it's just the way we are seeing it. We do all watch the show differently and I totally get that.

The epic love story resonates because it was so much about them being back together and how that, even with everything that went on during that year, it came back to them working together and listening to each other. It's still about what's happened to them BECAUSE of their time apart.

I think also, for me, I like the idea that they have, what appears to be, strong individual story lines. Sure - we still have a lot to find out, but the fact that Sam immediately came back to Dean's side and Dean immediately came looking for Sam means they still mean the world to each other. It's still very much about them, even with everything else going on. (And the Benny story line is just fascinating because there is NO WAY Dean would befriend a vampire. He's changed and that's interesting to me).

Also...I think I accept the fact that the show needs something to keep it going. I know many fans would rather not have the divide (and I am in that group a lot of the time also), but "brother issues" have always been a major part of the show so I think I'm accepting that on that level.

But I hear ya. I've seen a few posts expressing dissatisfaction. I think it's just the way each of us watch and want something different from the show.
7th-Oct-2012 11:15 pm (UTC)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I enjoyed the ep the one time I saw it, and it definitely made me think. I'm definitely hopeful for the season, which is great, because I was kind of on the fence about it before. Looking forward to learning more secrets and keeping my fingers crossed!

"I also think making Amelia unsympathetic was important. She was deliberately made unlikeable so there's a HEAP more going on with her that first mets the eye. Just like with Sam. I think making her like that and Sam almost overly distraught was very significant."

Completely agree! While I'm shook up about Sam not looking for Dean, there is more to this Amelia relationship than this first impression!

Hey there!

Sorry for the late reply on this one.

I can't wait to find out what the story is with Amelia. I rather like that she wasn't this all too sweet, instantly likeable person. I think it makes her more interesting and realistic.
