Dean & vid camera
I've been on a bit of an emotional roller coaster over the last few days re the show. Thanks to lots of chatting and fab insights from YOU LOT I'm in a much better frame of mind. (yay)

Seems that making things helps. I have a wee crack vid on the way (which might get me into a bit of trouble but...heh...it's all in the spirit of fun).

It would seem that taking my bat and ball and going home is just not an option (addiction does that to you). So, instead of grumble grumble I've done a mini-picspam on 8.09. The ep was beautifully shot and I'm curious about a couple of shot choices.

*guh* this series of shots have to some of my favs ever - especially that top one. (and look galwithglasses -another bridge! If I wanted to meta!wank I'd say we're looking at the gapping chasm between the brothers by the end of this episode...;D)

I also adore the one through the back window of the Impala, with Dean eyes reflected as he looks at Sam. I'm sure there's layers of meaning here in that shot choice. I also think this starts and interesting trend in the way some of this episode is filmed. To me, it's almost an outsider POV. I wouldn't have thought anything of it only it's repeated very strongly couple of times later in the episode.

It's curious that this scene has moments when it looks as though someone is watching Sam and Amelia. I assumed it was Don. And it may well be. (It also makes me think that Don is the mystery person we see in episode one, spying on the house). But - the pov changes. If it's a person then he suddenly moves. It may just be a directorial decision to be "stylish" but I think it's there to set up a sense of them being watched - from all sides. I am reluctant to speculate (because I think that's led to a lot of my disappointment in this ep) but it leads me to suspect some thing, rather than some one watching.

The fact that this scene is also shot as though someone is watching (bushes obscuring the characters) makes me think that there's a link between the scenes. Of course, it could just be the director's style - a way of reminding the viewer that they are an outside observer to the action. Either way I like it a lot. (I also like the idea of the viewer being a type of stalker. I have this ridiculous idea that Sam has been stalking Amelia - totally ludicrous, but it's been in the back of my mind).

A couple of other shots I loved:

Fabulous overhead shot that, once again, makes it look like something is watching. I want to say angels, but I daren't speculate too much. With an angel like Naomi around though, it is feasible that they might keeping an eye on things.

As a wonderful counter to the above shot we have this shot from under the water. The blood mixing with the water is fab.

So. Hat's off to Nick Copus, first time director on Supernatural. Checking his IMDB profile he's is very experienced. It definitely showed.

It would seem that taking my bat and ball and going home is just not an option

. . . and this attitude is why I love ya, bb! *hugs*

I also adore the one through the back window of the Impala, with Dean eyes reflected as he looks at Sam. . . . it's almost an outsider POV.

"Almost"? It's definitely an outsider POV -- you've suddenly been booted out of the intimate space of the front seat and relegated to watching from afar. It's . . . jarring. The first time I saw this scene, I was wondering who it was standing behind the Impala and spying on the guys. Also? From this angle, their body language appears almost contentious, like a fight's about to break out . . . yet Dean's reflected eyes are so calm, almost affectionate, as they regard Sam. Methinks you're right about the "layers of meaning" here.

. . . and gosh, I didn't even consider the bridge to be a reference to how far apart the brothers are growing. (Here's to hoping those distances get shorter as the season progresses.)

this scene has moments when it looks as though someone is watching Sam and Amelia.

Yup. Spying through the bushes, yet. (I stlll believe that Naomi and her crew has something to do with the Sam/Amelia story, but I guess we must wait to find out . . . )

this scene is also shot as though someone is watching

. . . I actually thought it might be whatever vampire Benny was after, that they were keeping an eye on him. At first, I thought it might even be Elizabeth, as I'd mistakenly pegged her for a vamp early on. I like your theory better, though. ;)

it could just be the director's style - a way of reminding the viewer that they are an outside observer to the action.

Love this theory, especially in light of Carver's S8 "perspective" theme, but still, I almost hope it's not the case. Gotta admit, I like the idea of something keeping tabs on Sam and Dean, especially when it doesn't exactly feel like a benevolent eye, you know? *also loved the bloody-water shot*

Nick Copus, first time director on Supernatural

He's an SPN first-timer? Wow. They need to keep HIM around, that's for sure!

Yeah - I like the idea of the viewer being booted out of the front seat. Dean's eyes do look affectionate (I ddesperately cling to there still being a lot of love and care between them, so I'll take what I can get :D)

The bridge is a bit of a joke between galwithglasses and I about how the bridges symbolise the brother's relationship. I joked about doing a (crack) meta piece on that one day. But I think it totally fits for this episode. ;D

especially when it doesn't exactly feel like a benevolent eye, you know?

Yeha - this would be pretty cool. I am desperately trying not to get my hopes up about anything. I really want something more with the Sam and Amelia story line (very curious for example why we've never seen any real affection between them. Never even a kiss...).

I'd love to see that director back. Maybe next time I won't be so....WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! about the episode...;)

I'm glad you're feeling happier. :)

And I love the way you can tease out what the shots mean. My brain doesn't work that way - at least not until the third viewing or so - so it's always fascinating to me.

It's curious that this scene has moments when it looks as though someone is watching Sam and Amelia. I assumed it was Don. And it may well be. (It also makes me think that Don is the mystery person we see in episode one, spying on the house). But - the pov changes. If it's a person then he suddenly moves. *nods* I appreciate that you don't want to speculate, but there does seem to be something amiss here, and your analysis of the shots backs it up.

The story doesn't quite track. Don finds Sam in a bar. It's all very civilised. Don says this is a messy situation, but they should let Amelia decide. Then, much, much later - late enough for people to be asleep - a shadowy figure watches Sam drive away.

Assuming Don is exactly what he says he is ... why would he be lurking in the dark out there? It doesn't fit with what he said.

Me too!

I think for this ep looking at the images helps me not feel so bad about it. ;)

but there does seem to be something amiss here, and your analysis of the shots backs it up.

I would so love that the is something amiss and there is something that happens later that makes it make sense. My fear is that's it's amiss because each director has put their own slant on things. We look for this "hidden" things and imagine they hold some clue. Then when it turns out to be nothing it's so disappointing (hence not trying to speculate).

That said...the name of this show is Supernatural (not Days of Our Lives) so I have to assume there is more.

why would he be lurking in the dark out there? It doesn't fit with what he said.

I know! I really hope it isn't Don outside (unless there is something about him we don't know). When I watched I immediately jumped to that conclusion because it seemed to make sense - but it really doesn't Also, Sam says he's leaving but actually creeps out later on. (?)

I really hope it's all got some meaning.

Glad you are feeling better! It was a pretty episode, though I have ISSUES with Louisiana.

I think I'm in a somewhat happier place than many with canon because (despite some flubbing in the execution) I've liked the Sam and Amelia relationship, so, though I might enjoy cool plot-twistiness, I'd be disappointed if it had turned out she wasn't real at all.

Do you read amonitrate's meta at all? She has a very even-handed (though her interests are more Deancentric) take on the current Sam and Dean conflict. I really think that a lot of the problem with how it is coming off is a major fail in pacing and clumsy continuity rather than anything irredeemably wrong with the content of what they are doing. I'm trying to put together some metaish thoughts myself. Also, without really believing that there's a plot reveal to come with Sam, I do think that we're sort of in the middle of things in their presentation of his story. Most of what I understand about what they are doing with Dean at the moment didn't come clear till 8.6 and 8.7, and we aren't at the structural equivalent of those two eps for Sam, I think. Not that I'm wanting to enforcey pollyannaness or anything, because I do think there are things that canon is doing rather badly at the moment, it just makes me sad when my flist drifts off!

I am glad you are feeling a little better about things. Also, I just love seeing things through someone else's eyes because I tend to miss things like this!

Me too! I love looking at the visuals. I don't pick up as much as some others (I'm thinking galwithglasses, hugemind and msdori) but I like trying to see what they are visually trying tell us. :)

Yay, I am glad you are still sticking around :) I enjoy reading your posts even though I don't always comment.

Oh man... I can't see myself goin anywhere. Even when show pisses me off I think it's fandom that keeps me interested and happy. I have some new strategies up my sleeve for future eps, so that's making me feel better.

Not that I've watched this season at all (I legit stopped caring afterthe storyline choices of S7 showed just how desperate they were to go for EPIC DRAMA only to be like "lol sorry no worries everyone is ok") but...

That is an extremely big fleur de lis in that sign...
10th-Dec-2012 12:32 pm (UTC)
It is! I wonder if it's significant.

(and er...I have to ask how you can across this post. I've never seen your name pop up before so I'm just curious...;)

thanks for popping by. :)

I'm glad you're feeling better about this episode.

There are a lot of really interesting things in the way they shot this, and I'm so happy I'm not the only one looking at this stuff! I was really interested in that shot through the back of the Impala, because it was such a jarring cut, as cassiopeia7 said, and it made me wonder what was going on. There's another shot like that, with the POV behind them and all we see is their backs, in, I think, Mystery Spot, where they're sitting on the motel beds.

And holy crap, you found something I didn't notice--that first shot of Sam and Amelia, there's a pot of flowers on the windowbox directly over Sam's head. We've seen flowers around Sam a lot this season, and I think the theory that flowers mean secrets (and I CANNOT remember whose it was, crap) is in play here. Also, that windowbox makes a halo (well, what I call a halo, anyway) over Sam's head, and it's all yellow. I'd missed that, and it's really interesting to me that it gets echoed at the end of the episode with Amelia's red halo.

We really do notice some of the same things--I'd pegged the bushes in those shots with Benny, too, and I wondered why Benny is so often partially obscured in that scene.

The blood in the water too, wow, that image. We've seen that angle before, way back in the early seasons, with a crucifix instead of the bloody hands, making the water holy instead of profaning it.

I've only watched all the way through once, and I've got a thesis due Friday so I can't do much looking at it until after that, but once that's out of the way, I really want to look closely at all the episodes so far and see if I can figure out what the heck is going on.
10th-Dec-2012 12:53 pm (UTC)
Hey!

The episode still troubles me but I'm willing to move on and try and appreciate some other aspects of it. :))

I think the Impala shot was purely artistic (like the Mystery Spot one... I adore that shot. Or maybe it's their backs...;D), but it was a rather curious choice - jarring as you say. I like the way the blue colours are reflected in that section.

I noticed the yellow flowers and knew that one of you guys would find the significance of them! :) I really like that they are prominent in the scene and it's interesting that the other flowers (in the other pot) are dead. So is the bush next to them. My thinking is that they've made a point of giving us those yellow flowers - they are alive and bright and noticeable (even if it's only to give us colour in the scene).

I'm really not sure how significant it is that we get these outsider POVs - it might be just to give us another perspective, or create some tension or a sense of danger.

I really want to look closely at all the episodes so far and see if I can figure out what the heck is going on.

Ha! If you figure it out let me know! :D

I haven't seen the episode, but these are stunningly gorgeous images. Maybe that's what I'll do from now on, I'll skip the episodes and just look at your picspams. ;)

It is in fact really hard to take your bat and ball and go home. (And I think Carver is lucky that's the case, although the ratings are showing some erosion, dropping a few hundred thousand in the last two episodes.) I have never mourned a TV show before. But then Supernatural means so much more to me than a TV show. It has helped me through some really tough times, and I feel like it has been taken away right when I needed it most.

I hope you can keep finding moments of beauty and positive things to hang on to, if your choice is to keep watching. My strategy is to save the episodes until such a time as I hear there's a good reason for everything, and then watch them, because that's the only way I'll be able to enjoy them. And I'd much rather enjoy them than be upset by them, even if it means waiting. Even if it means waiting in vain, I'd rather that than be upset by them.

Hang in there, and keep making therapeutic things, they are therapeutic for me too! Looking forward to the crack vid! *hugs*

The filming was lovely and there were some stunning moments.

Man, I wish I could just wait and see and watch once I know everything will be alright (yep - I'm someone who turns to the end of a story to make sure it all works out in the end...;D), but with this show I can't seem to just leave. (though I really thought I would after this ep - which would be my preferred choice - if I could have a choice).

I think there is a large contingent of fans who are struggling with the distance between the boys just as the boys are struggling with the same thing. And I think part of the reason it hurts is because we all struggle with relationships in real life, and we don't want to see our heroes having the same issues as we do, we want them to do better than real world people!

But while it is painful to watch, it is also fascinating in the 'train wreck' kind of way.

And until the season (series?) ends, there is always the possibility of change for the better...
10th-Dec-2012 01:05 pm (UTC)
This is true. I'm struggling with the show becoming this relationship drama rather than what I originally signed up for. I don't mind them exploring all this but when I think of my show this season all I see is trauma and (a weird kind of) romance. I think when I can look back and see that it all fits into a supernatural framework I'll be happier. If it turns into one giant soap I shall forever despair.

Until it does though I shall remain as strong as I can! *g* (and yeah - the brothers being back on the same page will count for a lot too...)

Gorgeous pics! I wanted to watch the ep again but haven't had the chance yet. But when I do (probably tomorrow) I'll keep your observations here in mind.

And I'm happy that you're feeling better again. (Die hard fan is die hard. ;) )

Die hard bloody fan here I can tell you!

(when I was sobbing my hubby had no sympathy, just said "You've finally realised how shit this show is.." At the time I nodded, but now I'm all defensive again...;)

We do!

I agree that Benny has been fleshed out much more than Amelia. I would say that I hope we get Amelia fleshed out as much but in all honesty I don't really care enough about either of them to know more about their lives. I DO care how they effect Sam and Dean's lives but I seriously don't give two hoots about their pasts lives...;)

I am very curious why Amelia has been created the way she has - unsympathetic. whereas Benny has been created so we sympathise with him (I think...I don't know how I feel about him actually. I haven't really given him much thought..)

I enjoy looking at the show like this. I think the filming choices can be really interesting. But...I'm a geek like that! :DD

This was a gorgeous episode. So many great shots. What strikes me about the images of Amelia and Sam and Benny and Dean is that they are shot looking through leaves and vines. There's so much of that this year. The Sam shots are much less brightly lit and hazy than they have been. The dream is ending.

That's a great shot of Dean in the mirror. I didn't see that.

There were a couple of other shots that give the idea of observing or lurking. There are a couple of shots through doors that are really pulled back. I hope you don't care if I stick 'em here.

I wonder if there are some parallels with Benny and Sam not really being who they say they are while they try to live a "normal" life. There's also something of Sam being a stalker that really comes across in the shot below. He's mentioned stalking himself in a couple of episodes.

I really hope they have this director back. He did an excellent job. I'm glad you're hanging around too.

ETA: The bridge business reminds me a bit of the end of Blood Brother. Dean says we'll cross that bridge when we come it and here they are.

I love those caps! I love how each of them are framed. There has been a lot of door framing this season. I'm not sure if it's deliberate (like so many other things this season) or whether I'm just noticing it now. The way they make us detached from what we are viewing is so interesting. I'd say it's definitely a running theme in this ep.

Dean says we'll cross that bridge when we come it and here they are.

WOOT! Man - I'm thinking there's enough there to have a "crack" at that meta...;DDD

Thanks! I'm looking forward to seeing your observations on this one. I noticed lots of red and blue and those yellow flowers above Sam are curious.

Like you, taking my bat and ball and going home just isn't an option -- thus reworking everything creatively seems to be the way to go :) I love your visual reworking, it feeds my need for reworking with words too. Like I totally missed that incredible from-the-backseat view of Sam and Dean with Dean's gaze on Sam in the mirror. How did I miss that?? Show is more beautiful than ever this season, which is weird when I'm frustrated with it - but it also gives me lots of good things to focus on and appreciate. I mean, LOOK at those shots! :)
11th-Dec-2012 07:03 am (UTC)
Exactly! Re-working creatively seems like the best solution. :)

The show has indeed looked beautiful this season. Purgatory amongst some of the best work. I think that's why it's so frustrating. Visually Purgatory was amazing. In terms of the story there...not so much. (or rather - opportunities seemed to have been missed).

But yeah - we have a while to make things better. ;)

There WERE some beautiful shots in the ep. I noticed a lot of them that I liked. :)

11th-Dec-2012 07:03 am (UTC)
Yeah - it's good to see them getting that right. ;)
14th-Dec-2012 12:11 pm (UTC)
I'm kinda late here, but this gives food for thought (as if Sam's possibly manipulated/fabricated memories weren't enough). I totally need to watch the season so far during the hiatus with all of this in mind.

The outsider POV does seem to be pretty heavily used in the Sam/Amelia and Dean/Benny scenes. And then there's the mystery person watching Sam in 8x01 which was definitely outsider POV...
14th-Dec-2012 01:55 pm (UTC)
Never too late! :))

After this ep I figure the mystery person outside was Don. Don having returned and checking out what was going on. It's either that or the "thing" that watching then now is the same thing that was watching before.

I just. I'm not sure they can be that subtle. I suppose we'll have to wait and see. It would be very clever if they are tying in the outsider POV in this ep with that scene in ep 1,

Thanks for dropping by! :)
