Sam Shirtless
This is an update to the last post actually.

Meant to say WOOT that Arrow has been renewed also. \o/ I am fast becoming a big fan of that show. Lot's of pretty, bromance, action, family drama, shirtless men (yes yes, you know I'm shallow!) and I really like the continuing myth arc. Very cool. (love that Guy Bee is a director on that show too...)

I also have to say that S3 of Spartacus is rocking my socks off. I am SO impressed with the production value in this show. There are times it looks like a movie. The characters are great and the story is intriguing. And ok.. there are lots and friggin' lots of mostly naked men. And women. It's incredibly violent though so I know that won't suit some. It's a graphic novel come to life. I love it! (and there's a sweet as pie (and er hot as hell) gay romance that's just melting my heart all over the damn place. Seems there was less of a hangup about who you hooked up with in those days. Makes so much damn sense).

And YAY White Collar is continuing to be fab. Liking the new storyline and seeing one of the Horsemen as the new big bad is fun too. :))

(ETA... just watched 3.03 of Spartacus and can I just add...*GUH*!)

I still think Arrow is pretty well written, but somehow it is starting to lose me, unfortunately. I am not quite sure why. Maybe it's because vigilante stories don't really appeal to me that much.

I agree on Spartacus, though. S3 is amazing so far and I am really sorry that it is the last season. When Spartacus started to air back in the days, I never thought that it would turn into such a compelling character drama. I am really impressed with the show on a regular basis! :)

Initially I didn't think I'd stay hooked on the show. I thought I'd get tired of it but for some reason I'm still there. I love the flashback and I'm looking forward to the big reveal about that place. Mostly it's good escapism. :)

*guh* Spartacus. I just now finished 3.03 and...wow. What a mixed back of emotions.

funny you should say that about Arrow, I've got 3 episodes post hiatus still waiting to be watched and somehow I can't seem to get excited about it. Though I really love Diggle.

Spartacus...mmm. I started watching the prequel one, and did like Gannicus but it's another one that didn't grab me, story-wise.
As for gay love in Roman times - they do seem to have had a very similar attitude to the Greeks, and M/M marriages were actually quite common. The thing that seemed to get Roman moralists in a twist wasn't the idea of homosexuality but where a man played the part of a woman in marriage (wedding veils, dressing the part etc). The rest of it seems to have been quite okay until the Christians took over.

I really love Diggle too...(and I think he gets even more awesome as the show progresses...;D)

I haven't watch the prequel I must admit - I wasn't really interested in Crixus background. I can't compare, but I think the actual series is probably better than the prequel (though I can't be sure).

And what a shame that we went from a time where m/m marriage was common to now.

I know, it is very sad that we regressed - though really all down to religion. And men. There were definitely women priests in the early Christian church too, but then male dominance took over and look what happened. 2 millennia later and we are still living in the dark ages in some respects.

omg yay, you are watching Spartacus!

I just finished, because someone on my tumblr roll convinced me to watch it and I was feeling all alone on my little island and I didn't have time yet to go out and find blogs to follow for it, so it's like an unexpected gift to find someone I follow already liking it!

I have to say, I'm still really mourning the death of Illythia - I mean, I get it, they couldn't just keep having the same villains, but I loved (to hate) her. All of the Romans are just so ... I mean you watch them and they are deplorable and disgusting, but man is it fun to watch them (though I am already warming up to Tiberius/Sabinus)

And I'm really loving the way we are getting ever deeper into the moral conundrum of "are we like the romans now" (man, that part with Nuevia...I'm so looking forward to how that will go)

And Agron and Nasir are of course delightful. Man last episode, hahaha Agron just pouting like a kid and jealousy and sex of course.

What is your favourite things, speak at me about Spartacus, I need somewhere to put all my new shiny feelings for that show!

Yes! I'm watching Spartacus! \o/

I'm still really mourning the death of Illythia

Oh yes yes! I loved her too. She really grew on me over the series. At first I wasn't so convinced by her but by the end I thought she (the actress) was amazing. In fact, I've been loving all the women in the show. They are such deep and interesting characters.

Argon's jealousy was a thing to behold. I love the way Nasir just laughed at him and then they had beautiful sex! :))

My favourite things?

Wow, that's hard. I love that we get both sides of the story. It's interesting to me that after the last episode the Spartans didn't come across as these "shiny" heroes but rather becoming more and more like the people they have escaped from. I like the the struggle is so real. It doesn't feel glorified.

I mostly like the story telling. An episode never seems to drag. There's a great mix of dialogue, action and sex. I love the character of Spartacus. It's been wonderful to watch him develop. His character has changed over the series and I've loved watching that. I am totally hooked on Agron and Nasir's relationship. I love watching their little looks and touches. And to actually get a full on sex scene....*swoon*.

Nuevia is SO interesting. When I think back to that shy slave girl in the first series to where she is now.

I love SO much it. I even find the violence interesting. It's just so so bloody but I think it adds a great element.

If I had the time I'd do a Spartacus picspam (or vid), but...alas, time is against me. I'll make do with chatting about it! :)))

xox (though I better seek a Spartacus icon...)

The female characters are amazing! Especially, because we don't only get one type of them, they all fight and act differently.

I may never get over the fact that they killed Mira, she was super badass. I feel like my favourite might be Saxa, because she is just so unlike anyone being positively portrayed on television.

But man the actresses especially of the Romans were so good! For example, at the beginning I couldn't really stand the way Seppia was portrayed, but the actress caught on so fast and showed so many of her layers that I grew to love her ridiculously fast.

And the Lucretia/Illythia dynamic urgh, more give me more of that!

My favourite Agron/Nasir moment must be in that episode in s2 where he fought with Lugo and Agron had to hold him back and it was just so cute \o/

Yes, the fact that we get both sides of the story is so cool. All the intrigue and politics are well done. I'm really digging the direction s3 seems to be going in. Because I love that they actually show us the moral ramifications of becoming big enough that they have to deal with things like how to treat prisoners?

Especially because Spartacus is kind of the only one who feels like they should be treating them well. But its not like you can't understand Nuevia's position. And it's not like the rebels aren't relentlessly racist anyway, even between each other. And I love that they actually go there and start to explore.

Nasir and Agron really are delightful. especially the size kink aspect ahem. I love their mutual respect and also that we get sex scenes ^^

I think the violence is fine. I tend to like the huge battle scenes more (man s2 finale with full on roman choir in the background, I clapped my hand, because as ridiculous as it is, it's also fucking epic) and I have been known to block half the screen when I didn't really need to see half cleaved off heads, but it fits the topic and because the blood is more cartoony than real (way to red and watery) it's better? kind of? because they use it more as effect and artistic choice than real violence.

I WISH YOU COULD FIND THE TIME FOR A PICSPAM! I mean, I feel like a lot of people get put off by the violence and sex and think that's all it is. And then they miss the amazing characters, especially the women, and the cool story.

For someone who can add one new tv show to her life, which would you recommend - Spartacus or Arrow?

I realize Spartacus would require more catching up, but you're the second one I've heard rec it. :)
12th-Feb-2013 10:54 pm (UTC)
Oooh...it's a tricky one.

Spartacus is really gritty - lots and LOTS of blood. It's unrealistic (sort of) but they actually show you the bits that you want to turn away from. (ag: Last night's ep sword right through someone's head). Lots of sex also. But the acting is top notch and I have been fascinated by the unfolding story. So, if you can stomach the violence then I'd go Spartacus. It's a show to really immerse yourself in.

BUT...Arrow is escapist fun and really easy watching. I'm liking it more and more as the season progresses. I(t's very tame compared to Spartacus).

Hmmm..try one ep of each and see which one grabs.

I'm loving White Collar too!

And I don't watch Spartacus because of the violence, but I've seen some gifs of the gay couple and they seem wonderful!
13th-Feb-2013 12:08 pm (UTC)
White Collar is great watching. I always look forward to a new ep.

And I can totally understand about the violence in Spartacus. Many a time I have to turn away. And Argon and Nasir are completely gorgeous together. <33
