Some TV stuff...(spoilers for everything!!)

Teen Wolf is back and is as confusing as ever. I really enjoyed last season - mostly because Dylan O'Brien was pretty awesome (and pretty!) playing evil!Stiles and confused, hallucinating!Stiles etc etc. It also had one of my favourite broment hugs of all time! ALL time! (except maybe some Starsky and Hutch ones. And nope...S&D haven't done this kind...yet!)

Not gonna lie. If it wasn't for Scott and Stiles friendship there would be very little keeping me stuck on this show. It's just such and honest and easy relationship. I also love Stiles' dad and Scott's mum. Most of the time I have no idea what's going on - I just go along with it all, not trying to work it out. I mean - what's even going on this season? Derek was de-aged for...why? And what's with Kate? And we have a new "group" and there's been no mention of poor Allison. It's like she never even existed. It's weird to me that I never really liked Allison and now she's gone I kinda miss her...WTHell?! There are times I love Lydia and then there are times I can't even figure her character out (super smart and then ditzy. I know the ditzy is an act, but then it's kinda not...) So, I'm not even going to try. Thank god I'm not fannish about this show because I am pretty damn sure it would drive me nuts!

I love this show. SO MUCH! It's such a visually sumptuous show. I love the psychology and the relationships and the creepiness and the sheer wrong-ness of it all. I adored the last season. The acting was fantastic - from all the characters (and how cool to see "Ava"!).

Hubby and I had a heated discussion about the finale. He was disappointed (annoyed they all came in one by one to be attacked) but I felt like I "got it" (though I have no idea where Abigail had been hiding all this time. In Hannibal's place?). I felt it was all about seduction. Hannibal had seduced all of the people he ended up killing (? - not sure who will actually end up really dead...). It's mentioned in the course of the show and at the end it felt like it all came together. Just like the way he presents his food. It's beautifully seductive, but underneath it all we know there's pure horror. They all knew he's "evil" but are captivated by him. I have nothing but praise for this show.

(I also read this interesting article on the gay subtext of the show vs queerbaiting. The notion of queerbaiting interests me and it's a discussion I've been wanting to have. I feel I'm not qualified to hold it though as I'm not entirely sure I understand the politics of it. Or that I'm in a position to claim it exists or not. I like this article though because it talks about seduction and the use of subtext).

Is it too much to say that his show is truly revolutionary? It certainly feels like it. To have a show with not only one but a HEAP of awesome female characters as the leads feels like something we just don't get to see everyday. Add to that, the fact that it's prepare to address issues of ownership of women's bodies (and WOW - the way it gets to the heart of that matter <3) AND have a broad range of sexual representations SO SO WONDERFUL! It's also an intriguing mystery and I can't wait to get to the bottom of it all. I also loved the finale - it was satisfying and quite unexpected. Can't wait for the next season to begin.

Another awesome show! I love how much money seems to be thrown at some TV shows these days. The look is so delicious. It's feels so sexy and yet has an underlying horror that gives it an edge. It's almost cheesy - but not quite (just like a "penny dreadful" I suspect). It's so difficult to explain if you haven't watched it. I desperately want Sam and Dean to time travel and go and tell them a thing or two about hunting vamps and demons. The thing I love most is its mesh of Victorian (gothic) horror literary classics (I have completely fallen for Dorian Gray. Perfect casting because...yep! *swoons elegantly*)

I will say though that there was one episode that I found extremely difficult to watch (1.05). Anything dealing with the torture in old asylums just...*shivers*...that was extremely hard going. Though I did love that we got Vanessa's backstory. I love all the characters (and wow bi-sexual lead male) and I am intrigued by just what the hell is going on! I'm waiting now for Billie Piper's character to die and be resurrected as The Monster's Bride. That's purely speculation of course - but I feel like that might happen. (btw - I haven't watched ep 8 yet - no spoilers...). Totally hooked!

I think GoT is the most expensive TV show ever produced (?). I think I read that somewhere... (too lazy to fact check at the moment). I certainly know the battle scene in the penultimate episode in S4 was the most expensive episode ever for GoT ($8M). I'm pretty damn hooked on this show too. I've fallen in love with many of the characters and I adore the story telling. I know (apparently) everyone dies but I don't care. I don't know how they die so I can watch for that. Also, I have to say that Peter Dinklage's performance as Tyrion this season was stunning. There were moments that he brought me to tears. And Sansa!! Finally coming into her own. Joffery's death was HIGHLY satisfying and I loved Oberyn (though he died rather stupidly!).

I know there's so much more to say about all of those shows, but I thought I better keep it short. ;)

Ummm..what else? When we've had enough of the heaviness of the above shows we watch Better Off Ted (introduced to me recently) and have a laugh. Portia de Rossi's character (Veronica) is my FAV! She is so GREAT! (I actually had no idea she was so wonderful. Shame, as she's an Aussie export and I never realised her talent). Any show that mocks US corporations (and is completely nerdy) is a winner in my books.

And White Collar is another easy watching, go-to show when the rest gets too heavy. Great relationships without being overly angsty. And kinda silly. :)

Oh and The Musketeers is on my re-watch when I'm feeling like a night cuddling up on the sofa show. So much pretty and sword fights and comfortable cliches that it leaves me just going..."awwwww".

Thanks TV!

I'm with you on GoT and Teen Wolf. I actually know TW from Tumblr more than anything - I've read and enjoyed quite a few Sterek stories from some of my favourite SPN writers, but I think I've only watched a couple of episodes ( the hugs one, natch) and a couple of genuinely creepy ones when Stiles was possessed, or whatever that was. I can't be a regular viewer, though, it's just too confusing and ridiculous and *teen* like.

As for GoT, I got in late but mainstreamed all of the eps, and yes, Peter Dinklage is mesmerising to watch. Love it- there really is nothing quite like it in TV right now, though I feel we should brace ourselves for the flurry of lesser budget lookalikes that are surely in the pipeline.

How many days have we got till the boys come back on our screens????

I think the TW fandom is extremely active (and, in fact, before I watched the show I though Stiles and Derek were actually an item!).

I can't be a regular viewer, though, it's just too confusing and ridiculous and *teen* like.

Yeah, it's very teen-like (and the fact that actors are in their late twenties makes me chuckle...). I am completely puzzled by the draw of this show. It really does just come down to Stiles.

I feel we should brace ourselves for the flurry of lesser budget lookalikes that are surely in the pipeline.

Definitely. I've watched a few eps of stuff that's really poor quality and not bothered with any more. With these high quality, very expensive shows it must be hard to compete.

Hee...and then there's SPN. I never include that show in these kind of posts because, well, that's not a TV show. That's a way of life!

I saw somewhere that it's less than 100 days 'til they're back! 8th October? Something like that? My next school holidays anyway...;)

Agree with you on GoT, really awesome!

And the boys will be back Tuesday 7th October!

The other shows I don't watch at all as it's complicated for me here in Sweden.

Yay October 7th! (Seems so long away though...!)

I admit, I can't be arsed with GOT after reading all the books over the years - though I totally agree with you about Peter Dinklage - he's sooooo good! He was pretty damn good in X Men too. That voice...
5th-Jul-2014 02:55 am (UTC)
Oh yes, he was great in X-Men. I imagine if I'd read the books I wouldn't bother with the series. Though - it looks amazing and the acting is fantastic. :)

I'm loving Orphan Black and Hannibal, too. I love your interpretation of Hannibal's finale. Makes sense :)
5th-Jul-2014 02:58 am (UTC)
Yeah, we were trying to work out why it ended like that (I really thought he would have been captured at the end), and the idea of seduction seems to fit with the rest of the season.

And OB is just so wonderful! I can't believe it when a new clone is introduced - Tatiana absolutely nails all the incarnations. She's incredible.

I really enjoyed Season 3. Stiles was great - and as I mostly watch for him I was a happy gal! The show makes little sense, but I enjoy it still.

I'm looking away from most of the TV discussion because we're not caught up on things yet. But yay for the BOT love (though it's Veronica ;))! It's one of my favorite comedies and was definitely gone too soon :( I don't know if you've seen this vid yet but I expect you'd enjoy it: http://thingswithwings.dreamwidth.org/113580.html)

Also, in case you haven't seen this WC vid, it's my favorite: http://giandujakiss.dreamwidth.org/508382.html

though I also like this WC/Leverage crossover: http://rhoboat.livejournal.com/163562.html

We've only seen the 1st 2 eps of Musketeers so far but it does seem fun.

Dammit! No idea where my head was at when I wrote Vanessa.../o\ Thanks!

Oh the BoT vid is DELIGHTFUL!! I have the hugest grin on my face! I ADORE those two!! Thank you for sharing that. I rarely go searching for vids (weird!) so I love it when they are recced.

And I also loved the other two. <33 White Collar gives me warm fuzzies mostly (all the relationships are great) and Leverage \o/ Shame that got cancelled.

Thanks so much for sharing those.

Musketeers is just such fun, easy watching. I have no idea how it stacks up to the books, but as entertainment it pretty much has everything I enjoy. The sword fights, gorgeous swash buckling men, strong, interesting women and dastardly villains (and wonderful scenery). Hee - I always gush over this show. ;)

My pleasure, BOT is not a very big fandom so I'm delighted you like it! Although Phil and Lem are adorable (and much missed), Veronica is also my favorite character. Portia de Rossi was awesome in that role.

I once read an SPN/WC crossover but it seemed perfect for one with Leverage.

Musketeers definitely benefits from more Santiago Cabrera, which we were woefully short of in Heroes and Merlin.

BTW, lovely icon!

The picture in the icon is by quickreaver. I absolutely adore it (so I made an icon of it).

The picture and the explanation for it is here:

Maia put me onto BOT. We watched some episodes and I was hooked! I'm still watching S1. ;)

And I guess I'm still not clear whether that scene was more meant to demonstrate the strenght of Dorian's pull and powers of seduction, rather than indicative of Ethan's sexual preferences.

I would say this was most definitely about Dorian's fluid sexuality and showing how seductive he is - that he can cast a spell on others and they fall for him. No matter who they are. I particularly liked that they weren't afraid to go there with Josh Hartnett's character. They could have easily shown Dorian's sexuality without that scene. So I think it was about Ethan's character as well - not necessarily about his sexuality - just more about the kind of person he is. I am loving his character more and more!

Have you seen the last ep yet?

Yep! I'm right up to date. Saw ep 9 a couple of days ago (hee! And it was as I predicted - though that wasn't hard top guess I suppose). And yay Ethan's development! Didn't guess that!
7th-Jul-2014 11:24 am (UTC)
Oh my gosh yes! I had forgotten about the scene with the wolves. With all of Vanessa's backstory I had lost that thread. That makes so much sense!

I figured with Billie's character dying (and her being a big name etc), they had to find a way to keep her on. That's the only reason I figured that's where they'd get the bride. It will interesting to see how her character changes (I'm predicting an accent change maybe?).

It's getting sooooo interesting.
